69th Pennsylvania Performs in Richboro

By Dr. Robert Levine

Recently the 69th Pennsylvania Irish Volunteers Regiment gave an all-day living history and Civil War encampment at Richboro Junior High School in Richboro, Pennsylvania for the entire ninth grade (over 200 children). The day portrayed was October 4, 1862, when President Abraham Lincoln visited the Army of Potomac outside of Sharpsburg, Maryland a few weeks after the Battle of Antietam.

The children had the opportunity to learn drilling and marching; overhear a heated discussion in which President Lincoln asked General McClellan to please move his Army and attack the Rebels; visit a hospital tent with surgeons discussing Civil War medicine; witness civilian women working with the Sanitary Commission and cooking on an open fire; and listen to Civil War period music played by the 69th Pennsylvania Irish Volunteers Band. The final highlights was a live shooting demonstration and manual of arms. Members of the 69th Pennsylvania displayed their authentic regimental and national colors, and many of the reenactors camped out on the school grounds the night prior to the program.

The members of the 69th Pennsylvania are committed to battlefield preservation through the collection of monies from school programs, encampments and selling of their Civil War Song Books. The Regiment has collected thousands of dollars over the last few years, all for battlefield preservation efforts. Please contact Dr. Robert A. Levine at 215/677-8686 with any questions scheduling the 69th Pennsylvania Irish Volunteers Band or of purchasing the song books.
