American Jewry and The Civil War ...our story

At the time of the Civil War (1861-1865) there were 150,000 Jews living in America. When the war broke out in April 1861, men of all denominations felt compelled to serve for their country. Estimates of over 8,000 Jews fought to preserve their way of life and fought for the confederacy.

It was no different for Jewish families as many found themselves divided fighting for their perspective cause. Many issues surrounding Jewish life and liberty became front page stories in Northern and Southern papers.

Dr. Levine has been a civil war reenactor since 1994 with both his children in the 69th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. He enjoys teaching the civil war to schools, community groups and organizations. In his teachings, he incorporates period music, as he plays the guitar, accompanied by members of the 69th Pennsylvania Irish Volunteers String Band.
